Character Design in Sec 1 (:

                                                Basketballie and Minton(2009)
Medium: Poster Colour on A3 Drawing Block

Basketballie is the one whih looks like a basketball and Minton is the one that looks like a shuttlecock. I was a very very sporty person at that time so I based my character design on sports! (: This is for me to reminiscent the 2 very sporty years of my secondary school life.
Art is inspired by our very own lives, by what we believe in, by what we see, by what we feel and by what we love.

Oops, basketballie got smudged the day before the assignment is due... :/

Blogger decided to flip the image when I uploaded it... >< Urgh. Anyway this is a page that shows the emotions of these imaginary characters. Cartoons have feelings too!!
To tell the truth, I like basketballie more! (: Well, I was a basketballer so I would prefer this character. And the roundness of Basketballie makes her look so cute! Haha (:

Digital drawing

                                                                    GIRL
                                                                    2011
                                                           Paint Tool SAI

Yeah so this was done last year in an attempt to try out digital drawings. Kind of inspired by Kimberley and Yi Yuan's digital drawings so I decided to try. (:

Well, this was drawn using the markers tool in SAI. I am not sure if I used airbrush tool but I think I did.

I realised that digital drawing may not work for me as I can't stare at the computer for so long! >.< My eyes hurt and I am really lousy at controlling the bamboo tablet that my mum brought home for me from her office. The tablet is somewhat faulty as it is unresponsive, which further decreases my motivation to do art on the computer! Well, I cannot really get how the blending works on the computer...>.< I guess I am better off with traditional medium! However, I guess I should attempt digital again as there are pros to digital art--> YOU CAN UNDO whenever you make a mistake! (: It is not like watercolour where you can easily screw up the whole painting when you add too much water or add the wrong colour. ):

By the way, the girl looks creepy and ghostly. >.<

Sunrise(:

Sunrise

Pencil Sketch
A3 size
2010
This piece of work was done in Sec 2, for our AEP SIA(we are supposed to hold an art exhibition as a group). Well, this is my favourite piece among my other works that are for the exhibition. The artwork depicts a view of the sun rising over the horizon at a serene beach, with a girl at the right side of the picture.

I like this artwork as it carries a deep meaning to it--- it symbolizes hope. The dawn of a new day suggests a new beginning, which means that hope is arriving. Light is often associated with hope and happiness, unlike darkness, which is often associated with depression and sadness. The girl, with her back facing the viewer, may be wishing as her hands are in front of her, hoping to have a bright future ahead, or hoping that she will be able to overcome her problems as a new day arrives.
However, I still think that I still need to practise more on bringing out the details. Even though the the sea is created using short and choppy strokes, I could have drawn out the waves in a more significant manner so as to show the difference between the sky and the sea. I could also have worked on bringing out the different foldings of the girl's dress to bring out the fact that the sea breeze is blowing at her. I wished that I had drawn this work in colour pencils as the beauty of a sunrise would be best expressed by colours.
Well, this work is actually inspired by another work that I found online:
Well, the composition and the way of depicting the sun rays of my work are similar to this work. Compared to the original work, I think that mine has lots of room for improvement, for example, I could have worked on the shadings more so as to bring out more contrast and dynamism in my work. In the original work, the beauty of the sunrays is captured when the clouds are present(as it looked like the sun rays are shining through the clouds). So I should have added more details to the surrounding scenery so that my work will look more interesting.
If I were to redraw this piece, I want to work on depicting the details of the waves and I want to use colour pencils for this work as I think that it would be a more suitable medium(I want to give this work a touch of softness but I want to add colour). However, my sketch is no longer with me now. I gave this work to a close friend recently as I think that she needs it more than I do. Now, she is in experiencing a difficult period in her life and I hope that this work will motivate her to work hard. Well, there is always a sunrise to end the night. So I believe that my friend will see the light soon!!! (:
